Fractal Stripes
An apartment proposal that explores how shared space can operate from a domestic cluster to the city block.
Collective housing organized through repeated dwelling clusters, shared rooms, terraces and connecting circulation.
Developed with Haemoon Hong for a Sackett Street site in Gowanus, the proposal belongs to the Collective Assemblies / Post-Familial Domesticities studio. The brief questions the isolated dwelling unit and investigates shared domestic arrangements. The project’s open axonometric brings occupied floors, common routes, terraces and structural elements into a single view.

Domestic clusters and shared rooms
The studio works across the scale of a person, a domestic cluster, the building and its neighborhood. Sleeping and bathing spaces are considered in relation to common living, working, playing and outdoor areas. The question is how repeated groups can share something useful while retaining places for individual occupation.
Early exercises use interconnected domestic clusters to explore symbiosis and repetition. Later design work brings those clusters into a larger building assembly. This progression frames housing as a set of relationships between private space, collective activity and the surrounding urban context.

Floor plates, routes and enclosure
The axonometric removes the opacity of the exterior so the building can be read across its levels. Stairs, floor plates, terraces and furnished areas remain visible together. Circulation becomes a link between different scales of occupation rather than an isolated service zone.
Restrained color and transparency distinguish elements within the dense drawing. The image connects the domestic organization to the larger architectural system, showing how repeated parts and shared spaces contribute to the overall proposal. Plans and shared-space studies supported this move from a cluster of rooms to a coordinated housing project.
Repeated dwelling volumes aggregate into larger continuous spaces.
Design development model
A subsequent model study coordinates the dwelling clusters, courtyard, circulation and structural layers. The drawings above retain the original graphic presentation.
